Daylight Savings Time

Transcript

Daylight Savings Time (DST) in Europe was introduced to make better use of daylight during the summer months. However, many people now argue that DST isn’t useful anymore. Some studies show that the energy savings are minimal. In 2019, the European Union decided to end DST by 2021, giving each country the choice to stay on either summer or winter time.

DST also causes many issues. For instance, the time change can disrupt sleep and health. Studies have also shown that DST can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes in the days following the time change because it disrupts people's sleep patterns. Additionally, research has found that traffic accidents tend to rise during the transition into DST, as people may feel more tired or less focused while driving. Another interesting aspect is how DST can affect agriculture. Farmers have often argued that the time change is not helpful for their schedules, as animals and crops do not adjust to the time shift as easily as humans. (168 words)
